Born a Fighter — September 20, 2012

Prince entered the world facing challenges most of us can scarcely imagine. Born with serious birth defects — no anus to discharge bodily waste, underdeveloped genitals, and no way to eliminate urine — his tiny body faced a battle from the very first day. At just three days old, Prince underwent emergency surgery to receive a colostomy, an opening in his abdomen to allow waste to exit his body.

Enduring with a Smile

By age four, Prince returned to the hospital for another critical surgery to create a way for him to eliminate urine. Despite these medical interventions, Prince lived every day with a severely distended abdomen, a constant reminder of his health struggles. When we first met him, the sight was heartbreaking — a brave young boy, burdened with pain and discomfort, yet radiating light and joy.

Because of his incontinence and the visible swelling of his belly, Prince was often the target of teasing and exclusion by both children and adults. And yet — he smiled. He was eager to meet people, to talk, to play, and to simply be a child.

A Moment that Changed Us All

While at the LWA center, Prince found a soccer ball and began kicking it enthusiastically around the courtyard. Concerned, we gently told him, “Oh no! You must be careful not to hurt yourself.” Prince looked up, beaming, and simply said:

“But I like to play. I need to play.”

His words struck deep. Here was a young boy determined to live fully, despite everything he had faced.

Hope Restored

With the help of our partners and supporters, Prince underwent successful surgery at CHUK to correct his colostomy. Today, his condition has dramatically improved, and his bright spirit is stronger than ever.

LWA has since helped enroll Prince in primary school, where he is thriving — learning, laughing, playing, and dreaming of a future filled with possibility.
